The Atacama Desert in Chile is one of the most spectacularly haunting regions on the planet. Travellers seeking adventure are stunned by the overwhelming atmosphere of the Atacama Desert, which is the driest non-polar desert in the world.
Stretching an incredible 600 miles from Peru’s southern border into northern Chile, travellers can visit the beautiful Atacama Desert on Titan’s popular Chile’s Scenic Splendour tour. It is a photographer’s dream, a barren wilderness that resembles a Martian landscape.
Astonishingly, more than a million people reside in the Atacama Desert, living and making their livelihoods in coastal cities, huge mining compounds, oasis towns and fishing villages. There is next to no rainfall in the Atacama Desert, yet the indigenous people manage to grow crops using water from snowmelt streams and irrigation systems that collect valuable drops of water from aquifers.
Despite the extreme aridity of the Atacama Desert, more than 500 species of flora grow upon the rocky ground, including cacti, herbs and leafy algarrobo trees. Fauna is limited to only the hardiest of animals, such as salt flat lizards, red scorpions, South American gray foxes and Darwin’s leaf-eared mice.
The charming town of San Pedro de Atacama is the perfect place to stay and meet the friendly people who farm the land using specially irrigated terraces. From here it is just a short trip to one of the must-visit attractions, the magnificent Tatio Geysers, which is the highest geyser field in the world. A truly spectacular sight at sunrise, visitors can also enjoy a relaxing and soothing thermal bath.
Be sure to also visit Toconao, a small Indian village where time seems to have stood still, San Francisco de Chiu Chiu Church, built in the 17th century and one of the oldest in the country, and the national monument Pukara Lasana, a 12th century fortress-town, which retains the original architecture of narrow streets and stone dwellings.
For an unforgettable journey into an unspoiled arid wilderness, visit the incredibly beautiful Atacama Desert in Chile.
