Mountaintop forests. Ancient capitals. Dense national parks. It’s fair to say our Best of Sri Lanka tour really packs a punch when it comes to crossing one or two points off your bucket list. But we’re very excited to announce a truly magical new experience which really has to be seen to be believed: an encounter with a flying baby elephant.
The Elephant Transit Home in Udawalawe, which you’ll visit on day nine of the tour, is a half-way house for orphaned elephants who are eventually released back into the wild following rehabilitation. Imagine the staff’s surprise when at feeding time this morning, Monday 1 April, one of their newest arrivals – a young calf named Jumbo – had taken flight above all the other elephants.
Our Sri Lanka Product Manager, Phil Ellis, is lucky enough to be in the area at the moment and snapped this exclusive photo for us. He said, “this event is really beyond words. I have been to visit the elephants here in Udawalawe countless times, but they usually have all four feet very firmly on the ground! I’d advise everyone to visit now before Jumbo flies away!”
The phenomena is so exciting, it’s almost unbelievable. But whether you see a flying elephant or not, our Best of Sri Lanka tour is a fantastic way to get up close and personal to these beautiful gentle giants.
