Inside Titan’s solo tours
Travel solo but never alone
Solo tours are empowering. They empower you to visit a new country and see attractions you’ve only so much as dreamt about. Along the way, you’ll make new friends and learn about different cultures and ways of life, all with a helping hand from one of Titan’s knowledgeable tour guides.
But best of all, you’ll get to learn more about yourself as you embark on an unforgettable journey.
Our solo tours can take you all across the world – from India and its enthralling wildlife to Mexico and its mystical Mayan pyramids. First off, though, let’s look at what a solo tour really is.
What is a solo tour?
There are a few notable differences between group holidays and solo tours, so we’ve called on, Ben Davis, Titan’s Head of Product, to help explain them.
Ben Davis – Head of Product at Titan Travel
Ben Davis is Head of Product at Titan and has been with us for over 20 years. He’s involved in designing the tours, creating special holiday moments for both couples and solo travellers.
Here’s his take on our getaways:
“Some customers are confident travelling with larger groups, whereas others might find it a little bit harder. We’ve now got dedicated departure dates on existing tours where you can only travel if you’re a single customer. These have been designed with features that make the journey both easy and enjoyable from start to finish for our solo travellers.”
These features work to ease you into the solo travel experience, so you can leave the organising to us and concentrate on taking in the magic of the tour from the get-go. They can also give you a good opportunity to get to know others on the trip, whether you’re a first-timer and new to solo tours, or are returning to travel with us again.
“There isn’t actually a singular definition of a solo traveller. We get all different types – from spouses looking to travel on their own to two friends wanting to see another part of the world. We make it easy to mingle at every opportunity, organising coaches to excursions and meals where you can sit down and get chatting to like-minded people.”
Like all our tours, solo travelling with Titan comes with a wide selection of perks and benefits. When you’re on one of our solo tours, you can enjoy:
- VIP door-to-door chauffeur service to and from the airport or port
- Optional, casual group meetups with fellow travellers
- Easy-going dinners and social events organised by your tour manager
- Tailor-made travel itineraries to give you a feel for each destination
43% of solo travellers travel three or more times per year
More than one in eight long-haul trips are taken by solo travellers
62% of female solo travellers do so to explore new cultures
Why take a solo tour?
We handpick attractions on our solo tours which we know will enhance your entire getaway. To find out about what else the trips involve, we spoke to Matt Gauntlett, the Head of Customer Experience at Titan.
“After going on a solo tour to California a couple of years ago, I realised just how much of an amazing experience travelling solo, with other like-minded solo travellers, can be. I saw first-hand how easy we make the whole process. From the second people leave their front door, all the way through to the activities we organise throughout the trip, Titan is there to inspire these people and give them the confidence to travel around the world.”
Matt has worked for Titan for over 10 years. He makes sure that each step of the tour runs as smoothly as possible, sharing his long-held passion for travel so that your solo travel experience can come to life.
Matt has built a keen knowledge of what works best for all of our customers, based on years working with both solo travellers and groups. Along with the rest of the Titan team, he tailors holidays to make every little detail work for you.
“We’ve also got someone, usually a tour manager, who is there to make everyone feel part of the group. They’ll facilitate drinks before dinner, for instance, giving everyone a chance to get to know each other. Their role is basically to make sure everything is as integrated as possible and flows in a way that works for solo travellers.”
“I remember the first day of a tour in California, we got on the coach and most people were sitting with an empty seat next to them – it was quite quiet. The next day, along with the tour manager, I made a decision to pair everyone up. We hadn’t even pulled out of the car park and already there was so much chatting. Everyone was introducing themselves and we were trying to do the commentary, but we couldn’t – there was that much talking! I thought to myself, ‘this is what it’s all about.’ We were – and still are – breaking down barriers.”
Matt’s standout solo tour memories
“On one tour, we had four gentlemen who were all travelling alone. They’d all lost their wives prior to this and were initially a little apprehensive about the trip. I introduced them to one another and they very quickly formed a strong bond. Throughout the tour, I saw that friendship evolve. Before mealtimes they’d always have a drink together, talking about their lives and families, and by the end of it, they were all really good mates.”
“Since then, they’ve kept in touch and rebooked together to go on more tours. I still hear from them from time to time, which is nice. What really hit home with me was the fact that despite unfortunate circumstances, these guys prove that life goes on – they want to travel and see the world!”
What our customers think about solo tours
Terry is a Yorkshireman whose travels have taken him everywhere from Italy and Croatia all the way to the United States.
“My first solo tour was to California in 2016. I was picked up from my front door and started speaking to people at the airport. Everyone was in the same boat, so it was easy to make friends. I got chatting to three gentlemen and once we were a week or so into the trip, it was like we’d known each other for years, rather than just a few days. Last year we went to Canada and Alaska together and we’re planning on doing something similar next year.”
David is originally from Ashford, in Kent, and has travelled to a whole bunch of exciting destinations, such as the Rockies and San Francisco.
“From the moment the tour started, Titan made us feel very, very welcome, which helped to quickly break the ice. On the second night (we were all tired from travelling on the first), they organised a get together in an outdoor area of a hotel in San Diego, so everyone got together and started socialising. They didn’t force you to talk to anyone, of course. Everything felt really natural. I’d never been away on my own before, but within two days I’d made some really good friends.”
“My favourite part of the trip was San Francisco – it was really vibrant and I loved seeing attractions which I’d previously only seen on the television, like Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge.”
What the experts think about solo tours
“For me, the biggest benefit of solo travel is the pride and self-confidence that comes in knowing that you can successfully tackle any challenges you face along the way. My trips have also helped to boost my confidence in other areas of life, like starting my own business! Solo travel opens you up to amazing opportunities, wherever you choose to go.”
“I’ve joined tours as a solo traveller where I’ve not known anyone, but by the end of the trip I’ve made a bunch of like-minded friends with shared experiences. Solo travel is totally liberating. I’m a keen photographer and I love the fact that if I want to spend ages getting the perfect shot or rising at dawn to go in search of it, no-one’s going to get irritated.”
“Solo travel is the most enjoyable way to see the world for me. Not only has it made me much more confident (I’m able to interact with locals and speak crucial words in several different languages), but it’s also taught me to be totally happy in my own company.”
Your questions answered
Will I be staying in a room on my own?
Yes – on our solo holidays, you’ll always be able to return to the comfort of your own room. This gives you space whenever you need it, as well as comfortable surroundings where you can rest and get ready for the day or night ahead.
Will I make friends?
We’ll provide plenty of opportunities for you to get to know everyone else on the tour. That said, you’ll always have the freedom to socialise as much or as little as you want. If you do feel like socialising, though, head along to an informal dinner led by one of our tour managers. Remember – some of our tours have meals included, with food that can be catered to any dietary requirements you may have.
Is everyone on the tour a solo traveller?
Yes. A lot of these people might be travelling solo for the first time and may well share the same concerns as you. We’ll organise activities, allowing you to get to know your fellow travellers and experience attractions first-hand.
How long are solo tours?
The length of our solo tours varies from shorter trips spread out over seven days or so, to lengthier tours lasting a few weeks. You could go on a week-long holiday in Europe, exploring the fairytale magic of Bavaria and getting to know your travelling companions over the course of seven days.
We’ve also got slightly longer trips, taking you as far afield as California, India’s Golden Triangle and Sri Lanka’s sacred temples. If you’re unsure about where to go and how to start planning your trip, think about how long you’re willing to be away from home, and where you’d like to travel. We have over 20 dedicated solo tour itineraries, giving you plenty of options to choose from.
What’s the best location for a solo tour?
All of our solo trips can take you to some of the world’s most exciting and fascinating travel destinations. If you’re drawn in by tropical beaches, spice-scented markets and colourful bazaars and palaces, then consider booking onto a tour of India’s Golden Triangle. Or you might prefer serene countryside views and cobbled European towns, in which case you should look into one of our solo tours of Northern Portugal.
Each destination on our solo trips has been chosen with you in mind. Whatever type of holiday you prefer, you’ll find something to love in Titan’s tours for solo travellers.
